Bimini

Getting There

How we verify data

Bimini is reached by private boat, ferry, or small aircraft. It is one of the few Bahamas destinations where the boat crossing from the US is as common as flying.

By Ferry from Fort Lauderdale

Balearia Caribbean operates a passenger and vehicle ferry service between Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades) and Bimini. The crossing takes approximately 2–2.5 hours. The ferry carries passengers, vehicles, and cargo, making it the primary commercial link between Bimini and the mainland.

Departures are not daily, check the current schedule before planning. The ferry is the most popular option for visitors who want to bring a car or significant gear but don't have a private boat.

By Private Boat

The most common way Floridians reach Bimini. The crossing from Miami or Fort Lauderdale is approximately 50 miles across the Gulf Stream. In calm conditions, the crossing takes 2–4 hours depending on boat speed and departure point. The Gulf Stream introduces the main variable: when wind and current oppose each other, conditions can build quickly. Most experienced captains watch for a weather window with light winds and calm seas, ideally crossing when the Stream is running flat.

The Bimini Big Game Club and Resorts World Bimini both have marinas. Slip reservations during peak season (spring tournament season and summer) should be made well in advance.

By Small Aircraft

Several charter operators fly into South Bimini Airport (BIM) from Fort Lauderdale Executive (FXE) and other South Florida airports. Flight time is under 20 minutes. Island Air Charters and Tropic Ocean Airways are among the operators that have served this route, though availability changes.

Inter-island service from Nassau is possible via charter but not routinely scheduled. Most visitors coming from Nassau connect through Florida or arrange a direct charter.

Entry Requirements

Bimini is part of the Bahamas. All standard Bahamas entry requirements apply, a valid passport and completed embarkation/disembarkation card. Boaters arriving from the US must clear customs and immigration on arrival; Bimini has a customs and immigration office in Alice Town. There is a customs fee for boat arrivals.

Practical Notes

  • The Gulf Stream crossing should not be taken lightly in small vessels. Many first-time crossers go with an experienced captain.
  • Fuel at Bimini is substantially more expensive than in Florida. Most boaters arriving from the US fill their tanks before crossing.
  • The ferry booking fills quickly during spring break and tournament season. Book early.
Prices and availability change frequently. Verify before booking.
