How we verify data

Bimini Experiences

Bimini sits about 50 miles off the Florida coast, close enough that South Florida boaters treat it as a weekend destination yet far enough to feel genuinely Bahamian. The island rewards visitors who engage with its culture rather than just its water.

Beaches

Radio Beach

Radio Beach on the western shore of North Bimini is the main public beach, sheltered from the Gulf Stream on the calmer harbour side of the island. The water is calm and clear, suitable for swimming and snorkelling. Food vendors and basic facilities are available nearby.

Water Activities

Shark Diving

Bimini's most striking marine encounter is shark diving with great hammerheads. These sharks aggregate seasonally in Bimini waters, primarily January through April, and several operators run cage-free dives in shallow water with these large animals. Atlantic spotted dolphins and southern stingrays are also regularly encountered. Neal Watson's Bimini Scuba Centre is the established operator. Verify current pricing and seasonal availability before booking, as hammerhead timing is weather and migration dependent.

Bimini also has named reef diving at Victory Reef and wall diving along the Bimini Wall.

S.S. Sapona

The S.S. Sapona is a WWI-era concrete-hulled cargo ship that ran aground in a 1926 hurricane and now sits in about 15 feet of water just south of South Bimini. Coral-covered and photogenic, it is accessible to snorkellers as well as divers and is one of the easiest wreck experiences in the Bahamas.

Bimini Road

An underwater formation of large rectangular limestone blocks arranged in a curved line in 15–20 feet of water off North Bimini. Geologists consider it a natural formation; a persistent minority considers it a remnant of Atlantis. Whatever the origin, it is an unusual dive and snorkel site with a memorable conversation attached. Verify current access conditions.

Dolphin Encounters

Atlantic spotted dolphins are commonly encountered in Bimini's open ocean, and several operators run trips specifically for swimming with wild dolphins in their natural habitat. Verify that any programme you book uses ethical, non-feeding interaction methods.

Offshore Fishing

Bimini sits at the edge of the Gulf Stream, which runs past at 3–5 knots and makes the offshore waters among the most productive big-game fishing grounds in the world. Blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and mahi-mahi are the primary targets. Ernest Hemingway fished here extensively in the 1930s and the island has logged over 50 world fishing records. Fishing guides and charter boats operate from the town dock and main marinas. The annual Bimini Native Fishing Tournament is held at Bimini Big Game Club, verify current dates. All billfish must be released unharmed outside sanctioned tournaments. Shark fishing is prohibited throughout the Bahamas.

Cultural

Dolphin House Museum

The Dolphin House Museum is Bimini's signature cultural stop, a hand-built structure covered in mosaic tile and found objects that tells the island's history through its walls. It is the work of one man, Ashley Saunders, who constructed and continues to expand it over decades. If you care at all about the texture of a place, this is worth your time before you get in the water.

The Boating Fling

Each summer, a flotilla of up to 30 boats makes the crossing from South Florida to Bimini in an organized group run. A lead boat charts the course, which makes the Gulf Stream crossing far less stressful for captains doing it for the first time. The event has been called the best part of summer by participants who make the trip annually. If you have a boat and have been putting off the Bimini crossing, this is the easiest way to finally do it.

People-to-People Programme

The Bahamas Tourism People-to-People programme connects visitors with volunteer local ambassadors across the islands, including Bimini. The match is based on your interests, so a fisherman gets paired with a local fisherman, a teacher with a teacher. It costs nothing and produces the kind of conversation you cannot manufacture on your own. Check current availability and sign-up procedures before your trip, as logistics vary by island and season.
