Getting around the Abacos is a multi-modal experience. The main island (Great Abaco) has roads and cars, while the outer cays are golf cart or foot territory, and one cay has no cars whatsoever. The ferry system ties the cays together; for independent exploration, a rental boat is the most liberating option.
On the Island
Great Abaco Rental Cars
Great Abaco has a paved road network running roughly from Treasure Cay in the north through Marsh Harbour and south toward Cherokee Sound. A rental car is effectively necessary for anyone based in Marsh Harbour who wants to explore the main island independently. Rental companies operate at Marsh Harbour Airport; book ahead in season as inventory is limited. Remember to drive on the left.
Marsh Harbour Taxis
Taxis meet flights at MHH and are available in Marsh Harbour for point-to-point trips. No rideshare services operate. Rates are not metered; confirm the fare before departing.
Golf Carts on the Outer Cays
Golf carts are the default transport on all inhabited outer cays. Most rental cottages and hotels on Hope Town, Man-O-War Cay, and Green Turtle Cay include a golf cart or have arrangements with rental outfits. The cays are small enough that a cart covers the whole island in minutes.
Man-O-War Cay
Man-O-War Cay has no cars at all: it is golf cart and foot traffic only. This is by community choice and contributes to its quiet, preserved character.
Between Islands and Cays
Albury's Ferry Service
Albury's Ferry operates scheduled passenger service connecting:
- Marsh Harbour to Hope Town (Elbow Cay)
- Marsh Harbour to Man-O-War Cay
- Marsh Harbour to Great Guana Cay
Ferries run multiple times daily on each route; the crossing to Hope Town takes approximately 20 minutes. Schedules are roughly regular but vary by season and day of week. Check the current timetable. Fares are approximately $15–25 per person per crossing.†
Green Turtle Cay Ferry
Green Turtle Cay is served by a separate ferry from Treasure Cay (on Great Abaco, about 1 hour north of Marsh Harbour). The crossing is short (~10–15 minutes). Green Turtle does not have direct ferry service from Marsh Harbour; you must drive or taxi north to Treasure Cay first.
Water Taxis
Private water taxis supplement the scheduled ferry services, particularly for early morning, late evening, or unscheduled runs between Marsh Harbour and the cays. Available through local operators and hotels; more expensive than the scheduled ferry.
Rental Boats
Renting a powerboat in Marsh Harbour is the most flexible way to explore the Abacos independently. Numerous rental outfits operate from Marsh Harbour marina. A 17–22 foot center console is typical. The Sea of Abaco is well-protected and generally calm: this is one of the most beginner-friendly boating areas in the Bahamas, though basic navigation competence is expected. Half-day rental ~$250–350, full day ~$350–500+.†
Sailing Charters
Marsh Harbour is the main base for bareboat and crewed charter sailing in the Abacos. Numerous charter companies operate from the Abaco Beach Resort marina and other Marsh Harbour facilities. See the Experiences section for more detail.
Practical Notes
- The Albury's Ferry dock in Marsh Harbour is near the Harbour View Marina on Bay Street; confirm the exact departure point as ferry operations have shifted post-Dorian.†
- Hope Town, Man-O-War Cay, and Great Guana Cay are all easily managed without a car. A golf cart on arrival handles everything.
- If based in Hope Town or another outer cay and doing a day trip to Nippers (Great Guana Cay), you'll need to take the ferry back to Marsh Harbour and then a separate ferry to Guana, or arrange a water taxi directly. Plan the timing carefully.
- Fuel for rental boats is charged separately; get a full tank and return it full to avoid inflated fuel surcharges.
- Night navigation between cays is not recommended without local knowledge and proper charts.
