Accommodation in the Abacos ranges from small waterfront inns and marina hotels on the outer cays to vacation rentals and a handful of mid-scale resorts. There is no large luxury resort complex equivalent to Atlantis or Sandals here. The Abacos attract sailors, divers, and travelers who prefer a quieter, more independent style. Note that Hurricane Dorian (2019) damaged some properties; verify current status before booking.†
Accommodation is spread across two categories of location: the main island (Great Abaco, centered on Marsh Harbour) and the outer cays (Hope Town/Elbow Cay, Man-O-War Cay, Great Guana Cay, Green Turtle Cay). Outer cay stays require ferry or boat access and offer a more immersive, quieter experience. Marsh Harbour is convenient for airport access and provisioning but less charming for a holiday base.
Luxury
Abaco Beach Resort and Boat Harbour
The main full-service resort on Great Abaco, located directly on the water in Marsh Harbour. Marina facilities, a pool, beach area, and dining on-site. The most complete resort infrastructure in the Abacos. Comfortable rather than extravagant. Rates typically $250–450/night.†
Green Turtle Club and Resort
On Green Turtle Cay, this property has been a destination for cruising sailors and visitors for decades. Marina, pool, comfortable rooms and villas, and a good restaurant and bar. Classic Bahamian club atmosphere. Rates approximately $200–400/night for rooms; higher for cottages.†
Bluff House Beach Hotel
Also on Green Turtle Cay, with a clifftop location offering good views. A mid-to-upper property on Green Turtle.†
Mid-Range
Hope Town Inn and Marina
A small inn on Elbow Cay (Hope Town), popular with visitors who want to be on the cay rather than in Marsh Harbour. Good marina for boaters, comfortable rooms, convenient to Hope Town village. Rates approximately $180–300/night.†
Turtle Hill Vacation Villas (Hope Town)
Self-contained villas in Hope Town with views over the harbour. Good for families or longer stays.†
Nipper's Beach Bar Cottages (Great Guana Cay)
Nippers rents cottages associated with the famous beach bar complex. Location is ideal for beach access and the Sunday pig roast, but more limited for the rest of the week unless you want true seclusion.†
Note: Staniel Cay is technically in the Exumas, not the Abacos. See Exumas accommodation.
Budget
Smaller guesthouses and cottages, Marsh Harbour area
A limited number of basic guesthouses in and around Marsh Harbour offer the most affordable accommodation in the Abacos, roughly $80–150/night. These are functional bases for the airport area but not particularly charming.†
Vacation rentals
Airbnb and VRBO listings exist throughout the Abacos cays, often at better rates than small inns. Hope Town and Great Guana Cay have particularly good vacation rental supply. A week-long cottage rental can offer excellent value for families. Read recent reviews carefully given post-Dorian changes.
Practical Notes
- Book well ahead for December through April peak season. The Abacos attract a loyal repeat visitor base and good properties fill early.
- Some accommodation damaged by Dorian in 2019 has been rebuilt; other properties have not reopened. Always check booking platform reviews for recent dates, and consider calling ahead for smaller properties.
- Outer cay accommodation requires ferry access. Factor in ferry schedules when planning late arrivals.
- Most smaller inns and cottages do not have 24-hour front desks; coordinate arrival times in advance.
- Golf cart rental is often separate from room rental on the outer cays; ask when booking if a cart is included or available on-site.
