The Out Islands

The Out Islands

Experiences

The Out Islands offer the most specialised and least-packaged experiences in the Bahamas. Bimini is built around fishing, shark diving, and proximity to the Gulf Stream. Andros is built around bonefish flats, blue holes, and the barrier reef. Neither island is a general holiday destination: they reward visitors who come specifically for what each island does exceptionally well.

Beaches

Andros

Andros beaches are undeveloped and wide but not the primary reason most visitors come. The best accessible stretches are in North Andros: long sand beaches on the island's west side, often completely empty. The real Andros draw is underwater rather than above it.

Bimini

Radio Beach on North Bimini is the main accessible beach: calm, clear water on the island's western (Bimini Harbour) side, suitable for swimming and snorkeling. Not a beach destination to rival the Exumas or Harbour Island, but pleasant.

The eastern side of North Bimini faces the Gulf Stream and has more wave action: better suited to fishing than swimming.

Water Activities

Andros

Bonefishing is Andros's signature claim to global recognition. The island's western and southern flats are among the most productive bonefish habitat in the world, with miles of shallow clear-water sand and turtle grass flats holding large, spooky fish. World-class guides operate through the established lodges, including Small Hope Bay, Andros Island Bonefish Club, Kamalame Cay, and others. A guided day on the flats with a skilled Andros guide is an experience anglers travel from everywhere to have. Verify current guide and lodge availability before booking.

Blue holes are one of Andros's most unusual and accessible attractions. The island has the highest concentration of blue holes anywhere in the world: circular, extraordinarily deep freshwater or marine pools connected to underwater cave systems. Some are accessible for swimming (freshwater inland blue holes in North Andros are known for their clarity and layered water). Others are active dive sites. The blue holes at Bight of Old Robinson are among the more accessible. Verify which specific blue holes are currently accessible to independent visitors versus guided only.

Andros Barrier Reef runs along the eastern edge of Andros for approximately 140 miles, making it the third-longest barrier reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef and Mesoamerican Reef. The reef drops off dramatically into the Tongue of the Ocean: a deepwater trench adjacent to the reef wall creates exceptional wall diving. Dive operations are primarily lodge-based. Verify independent dive operator availability.

Bimini

Shark diving, particularly with hammerhead sharks, is Bimini's most striking marine encounter. Great hammerheads aggregate in Bimini waters seasonally (primarily winter and spring, approximately January through April), and several dive operators offer cage-free dives in shallow water with these large animals. Verify current operator availability and seasonal timing.

S.S. Sapona

S.S. Sapona is a WWI-era concrete-hulled cargo ship that was beached in a hurricane in the 1920s and sits in shallow water just south of Bimini. The wreck is accessible to snorkelers as well as divers, sitting in roughly 15 feet of water. Coral-encrusted and atmospheric.

Bimini Road

Bimini Road is an underwater formation of large rectangular limestone blocks arranged in a curved line in about 15–20 feet of water off North Bimini. Geologists consider it a natural formation; a small but vocal community considers it a possible remnant of Atlantis. Whatever its origin, it is an unusual dive and snorkel site with an interesting conversation attached. Verify current accessibility.

Dolphin encounters: Atlantic spotted dolphins are commonly encountered in Bimini waters, and some operators offer trips specifically for swimming with wild dolphins in their open-ocean habitat. Verify current operator availability, as dolphin encounter programs vary in format and ethical approach.

Offshore fishing: Bimini sits at the edge of the Gulf Stream, which flows past with 3–5 knot current and makes the waters immediately offshore some of the most productive big-game fishing in the world. Blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and mahi-mahi are primary targets. Ernest Hemingway fished Bimini extensively in the 1930s; world records have been set in these waters. Fishing guides and charter boats operate from Alice Town's docks.

Land and Cultural

Andros

Androsia Batik Fabric Factory

Androsia batik fabric factory is located in Fresh Creek: the only batik fabric producer in the Bahamas, making distinctive bright-patterned fabric and clothing that is sold throughout the archipelago. Factory visits are possible and provide context for one of the few uniquely Bahamian craft products. Verify current visiting hours.

Red Bays

Red Bays is a small community on the northwest coast of Andros where a population of Seminole-Bahamian descent maintains traditional basket-weaving and craft traditions. Verify current visitor access.

Crab Festival

Crab Festival in Fresh Creek (historically held in June) celebrates the land crab migration: a seasonal event where crabs move in large numbers and locals harvest them. A genuinely unusual Bahamian cultural event. Verify current dates and format.

Kamalame Cay

Kamalame Cay (private resort island off Central Andros) has the only overwater spa in the Bahamian archipelago: a distinctive facility set over the water in the protected harbour between Kamalame Cay and the main island. Verify current operation.

Day Trips

Andros day trips are primarily guided fishing or diving excursions rather than island-hopping. The island itself is the destination.

From Bimini, boat trips to the Bimini Road, S.S. Sapona, and nearby snorkel sites are half-day or day-long excursions arranged in Alice Town.

Practical Notes

  • Andros experiences are predominantly guide-dependent: the flats, the blue holes, and the reef are accessed through guides and lodges rather than independently. Budget for guide fees as a core trip cost.
  • Bimini shark diving and hammerhead encounters are seasonal; verify exact timing before booking a trip specifically for this experience.
  • Out Island conditions change. Verify current operator availability, site accessibility, and programme formats through recent sources before finalising plans.
