Grand Bahama

Where to Stay

Grand Bahama's accommodation landscape underwent significant disruption after Hurricane Dorian struck in September 2019. Several properties were damaged, some substantially. The island's hotel inventory as of this writing is smaller than it was pre-Dorian, and the tourism recovery has been gradual. Verifying the current operating status of any specific property before booking is essential — more so here than on other Bahamian islands.

The main hotel concentration is in the Port Lucaya area, a waterfront marina and marketplace district that has been the primary tourist zone since the 1970s. Freeport itself, a few miles inland, has more limited accommodation options aimed primarily at business travellers and longer-stay visitors.

Grand Bahama is generally more affordable than Nassau's better hotels and significantly cheaper than Harbour Island. The tradeoff is a smaller range of options and, post-Dorian, some uncertainty about which properties are operating fully.

Luxury

Pre-Dorian, Grand Bahama had several large resort properties that anchored the higher end of the market. The post-hurricane recovery has meant that the luxury tier has contracted. There is no Atlantis equivalent currently operating on the island.

Pelican Bay Hotel

The well-regarded mid-to-upper tier option that has continued operating post-Dorian. It sits directly on the marina at Port Lucaya, with well-maintained rooms, a good restaurant, and proximity to the Port Lucaya Marketplace. It is the most consistently recommended property for visitors who want reliable quality.

Some boutique and vacation rental properties offer higher-end accommodation in beach settings.

Mid-Range

Pelican Bay Hotel spans into this category depending on room type and season, with rates typically in the $130–200/night range.

Boat House Villas

Boat House Villas and similar villa rental complexes offer self-catering accommodation at moderate rates, attractive for families or longer stays.

A number of smaller guesthouses and locally-run properties in Freeport offer mid-range accommodation. These are less visible to international booking platforms but available through local enquiry.

Budget

Grand Bahama has more budget-viable options than Nassau or Harbour Island, with smaller guesthouses and basic hotels available in the $80–130/night range. Freeport has locally-run accommodation that caters to business travellers and budget visitors.

Vacation rental platforms (Airbnb, VRBO) list properties across the range, including more affordable self-catering options. This segment has grown as the traditional hotel market contracted post-Dorian.

Practical Notes

  • The post-Dorian caveat is serious. Unlike other Bahamas islands where most established properties are reliably open, Grand Bahama has seen closures and reduced operations since 2019. Do not assume a property you read about in a pre-2020 review is still operating. Check directly with the hotel by phone or email before booking, and cross-reference with recent traveller reviews.
  • Booking flexibility is advisable given the uncertainty about which properties are operating at full capacity. Refundable rates are worth the slight premium.
  • The shoulder and low seasons (summer through early November) offer better value but coincide with hurricane season. Travel insurance is advisable.
  • Some properties in the most storm-affected parts of the island (eastern Grand Bahama) may have variable quality or ongoing repairs. Port Lucaya properties have generally recovered better than those further east.
  • Ask about generator or power backup when booking — infrastructure resilience varies.
