Eleuthera

Eleuthera

Getting There

Eleuthera is served by three airports spread across its 110-mile length, making it one of the more accessible Out Islands while still requiring some planning to reach. The island has no direct ferry or boat service from Florida: air is the only practical option from the US.

By Air

Governor's Harbour Airport (GHB)

Governor's Harbour Airport sits near the middle of the island and is the most convenient entry point for most visitors. American Eagle operates service from Miami, making it a natural hub connection for travelers from the eastern US and beyond. GHB is a small airport with limited facilities, but it puts you close to the island's central towns and beaches.

North Eleuthera Airport (ELH)

North Eleuthera Airport is the northern gateway and the critical connection point for visitors heading to Harbour Island. It also serves those interested in the Glass Window Bridge area. American Eagle flies from Miami; other connections may be available via Nassau.

Rock Sound Airport (RSD)

Rock Sound Airport serves the southern half of the island and is useful for travelers heading to Cotton Bay or the Lighthouse Beach area.

All three airports handle small aircraft only: turboprops and small regional jets. Runway length limits service to regional carriers. Travelers from major northeastern US cities will typically connect through Miami or Nassau rather than flying direct.

Bahamasair operates service from Nassau to Eleuthera airports, with the flight taking approximately 35 minutes. This is a practical option if you're already routing through Nassau or want the flexibility of the national carrier. Charter flight operators also serve Eleuthera and can be cost-effective for small groups.

By Sea

There is no passenger ferry or high-speed boat service from Florida to Eleuthera. The island sits far enough offshore that water access from the US is not practical for most visitors.

From Nassau

From Nassau, air is the fastest option at roughly 35 minutes to any of the three airports. Bahamasair and charter services cover this route regularly.

The mail boat from Nassau is an alternative for those with time and a spirit of adventure. The crossing takes approximately 10 to 12 hours and typically operates on a weekly schedule, carrying passengers alongside cargo and freight. It departs from Potter's Cay Dock in Nassau. This is a genuine local experience rather than a comfortable transit option: bring food, water, and patience. Fares are inexpensive.

Practical Notes

  • Book flights to Eleuthera well in advance, especially for peak season (December through April). Seats on small regional aircraft fill quickly.
  • If arriving at North Eleuthera (ELH) and continuing to Harbour Island, a taxi to Gene's Bay ferry dock takes about 5 minutes, and the water taxi crossing to Harbour Island is another 3–5 minutes. Total transfer time is manageable.
  • The three airports are not connected by public transport. Know which part of the island you're heading to before booking flights.
  • Rental cars can sometimes be arranged through your accommodation ahead of arrival: worth confirming, as taxis at smaller airports can be limited.
  • There is no departure tax paid separately; it is typically included in airline ticket prices as an airport fee.
