Eleuthera is a long, narrow island whose most notable cay, St. George's Cay, sits off its northern tip and functions as a distinct community rather than a tourist attraction. It is the kind of place worth understanding before visiting.
St. George's Cay
St. George's Cay is the home of Spanish Wells, one of the most distinctive and prosperous small communities in the Bahamas. The town has a population of roughly 1,500 people, a lobster fishing industry that generates significant income relative to the island's size, and a cultural character unlike anywhere else in the Bahamas.
Spanish Wells is not a conventional tourist destination. It lacks resorts, tour operators, and the infrastructure that typically draws visitors. What it has is:
- Lobster fishing, Spanish Wells supplies a substantial portion of the Bahamas' exported crawfish (spiny lobster). The industry is visible in the boats, the docks, and the general sense that the town has an economy independent of tourism.
- Loyalist heritage, The community descends from Eleutheran Adventurers and later Loyalist settlers, and maintains a cultural distinctiveness, including a recognizable local accent and dialect, that has persisted for centuries.
- A well-maintained town, Spanish Wells is notable for its neatness and prosperity. White-painted houses, tidy streets, golf carts as the primary transport. Walking the town is a low-key pleasure.
- Beaches, The cay has several good beaches, including one at the western end of the island that is quiet and attractive.
The community is known for being reserved toward outsiders in a way that reflects a long history of self-sufficiency rather than any hostility. Visiting respectfully and without expectation of tourist-friendly hospitality is the right approach.
Access: A short ferry crossing from the North Eleuthera dock (also called the "three island dock" area near the airport). The ferry crossing takes a few minutes. Spanish Wells has its own small airstrip with connections to Nassau.
