How we verify data

Nassau sits on New Providence Island, surrounded by several small cays that function primarily as day-trip destinations. Salt Cay is the one with its own distinct identity and regular visitor access.

Salt Cay

Salt Cay, more commonly called Blue Lagoon Island by tour operators, sits approximately four miles east of Nassau's Paradise Island, a 15-minute boat ride from the city. It is a private island operated as a commercial day-trip and marine encounter destination, the closest thing to a dedicated cay experience accessible from Nassau without booking a flight to the Exumas.

The island offers:

  • Dolphin encounters, structured in-water swims and beach interaction programs with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. Multiple tiers of experience are available, from wading in shallow water with a dolphin to full open-water swims. This is one of the most established dolphin programs in the Caribbean and draws significant numbers of cruise ship passengers.
  • Sea lion program, similar structured encounters with sea lions.
  • Beach facilities, loungers, food and drink service, watersports equipment rentals, and calm shallow water well-suited to families with children.
  • Nature trails, the island has walking paths through native vegetation. Short and not strenuous.

Salt Cay is the original and official name; the "Blue Lagoon Island" branding was introduced by the tour operator. The two names refer to the same place.

The experience is deliberately resort-adjacent in character, organized, staffed, and heavily attended on cruise ship days. It is not the Exumas. For travelers who want a curated day out from Nassau with beach time and a wildlife encounter, it works well. For travelers seeking something wilder, the Exumas are the better answer.

Note on Nassau pig beach: A swimming pig experience has also been established near Athol Island, approximately 20 minutes by boat from Nassau. This is a separate operation from Salt Cay and from the original Exuma pigs.

Access: Ferry and catamaran transfers from Paradise Island and Cable Beach docks; multiple operators offer day packages. Booking in advance is strongly recommended, particularly during cruise season.
