Harbour Island

Harbour Island

Getting There

Harbour Island has no airstrip and no direct boat service from Florida. Every arrival involves a multi-step transfer, but the steps are short and well-worn, and the crossing itself is part of the experience.

By Air

The entry airport is North Eleuthera Airport (ELH), a small regional airport a short water crossing away from Harbour Island.

American Eagle

American Eagle operates service from Miami to ELH, with the flight taking approximately 25–30 minutes. This is the primary route for most US visitors.

Other regional carriers and charter operators also serve ELH, and connections are available via Nassau on Bahamasair and private charters. From the US northeast and midwest, connections through Miami are generally the most reliable routing.

Once on the ground at ELH, the transfer to Harbour Island is straightforward:

  1. Take a taxi from the airport to Gene's Bay ferry dock — about 5 minutes and roughly $5.
  2. Board a water taxi across the harbour to Harbour Island — the crossing takes 3–5 minutes and runs continuously through the day and into the evening.

Total time from wheels-down at ELH to standing on the Harbour Island dock is typically under 30 minutes.

By Sea

There is no direct passenger ferry or boat service from Florida, Nassau, or other Bahamian islands to Harbour Island. All sea access goes via the Gene's Bay water taxi crossing from North Eleuthera.

The water taxi service runs on a fill-and-go basis — boats leave when they have passengers, so there is rarely a long wait during daylight hours. Service continues into the evening but thins out at night. If arriving on a late flight, confirm water taxi availability with your accommodation before landing.

From Nassau

From Nassau, fly to North Eleuthera Airport (ELH), approximately 25 minutes by air on Bahamasair or charter. Then follow the taxi-and-water-taxi route described above.

It is also theoretically possible to reach North Eleuthera by mail boat from Nassau (Potter's Cay Dock), though this takes 10–12 hours and is not a practical choice for most visitors.

Practical Notes

  • Seats on the Miami–ELH route are limited and fill quickly in peak season (December through April). Book as early as possible.
  • If your flight to ELH is cancelled or delayed, Nassau is the fallback hub for rebooking. Build an extra travel day into your itinerary if the trip is time-sensitive.
  • The water taxi fare from Gene's Bay to Harbour Island is a few dollars per person each way — have small US dollar bills available.
  • Water taxis carry luggage, but oversized bags, surfboards, or large items may require extra coordination. Ask in advance if you are travelling with unusual cargo.
  • Most Harbour Island hotels will provide guidance on the transfer when you book — do not hesitate to ask your accommodation for current logistics and any updates to water taxi hours.
  • North Eleuthera Airport has minimal facilities: a small waiting area, no restaurant. If you have a long wait, options are limited.
